Parents

LHS Longhorns Fencing Club is run by volunteers. Some volunteer positions require knowledge of fencing, while others do not. Even if you find yourself in a position were you are not able to volunteer, we highly recommend you attend the tournaments to show support for your child. You would be surprised at how much that means to the children. It is a long day but worth every minute if they know you are there cheering them on!!!

The Following is a List of Volunteer Opportunities for Parents to get Involved:

  • Tournament Directors and Timekeepers

    • During tournaments, the league relies on parent volunteers to serve as bout directors (referees).

    • They award points, halt fencing, call penalties, etc.

    • This requires league training & certification, which the club will arrange & pay for.

    • Timekeepers require no certification and only a minimum of training.  We typically have a new parent shadow an experienced timekeeper during a tournament.  The club provides stopwatches although some parents use their smartphones.

    • We break tournaments into morning pools & afternoon DE’s (direct elimination) for parent directors & timekeepers.

  • Banquet Planners

    • Help team parents to plan the end of the year party

    • Scheduling

    • Purchasing gifts

    • Invitations

    • Supervising during party

    • Clean up

  • Weekly Tournament Participation

    • We encourage all parents to attend each tournament that their child is participating in.

    • Come cheer them on.

    • Help keep their moral up during the day.

    • Support and help with any issues that may arise throughout the day.
